In many reactions catalyzed by metal ions, they behave like the proton, essentially as Lewis acids but are often more effective than the proton because they can be present at high concentrations at neutral pH. Among the different roles that metal ions can play in the catalytic event, the most common are their ability to orient the substrate correctly for the reaction, to exchange electrons in redox reactions, to stabilize negative charges. This indication may reveal useful to develop new catalytic machineries of enzymes for new‐to‐nature transformations.Ī large number of enzymes need a metal ion to express their catalytic activity. Our outcomes evidence the influence of the lanthanide contraction effect in all the elementary steps of the catalytic reaction mechanism.

The present investigation looks on the electronic, energetical and geometrical behavior of the methanol dehydrogenase from Methylacidiphilum fumariolicum SolV strictly dependent on early lanthanide metals with +3 oxidation states by examining enzyme‐substrate complexes of all the lanthanides and focusing the attention on the catalytic reaction mechanism of two methanol dehydrogenases having as cofactor europium and ytterbium belonging to the in mid‐ and later‐ series of the lanthanides, in comparison with the methanol dehydrogenase containing the cerium, one early lanthanide. This enzyme represents an essential component of methanol utilization by both methanol‐ and methane‐utilizing bacteria. The widespread XoxF, a recently discovered methanol dehydrogenase enzyme used by methylotrophic bacteria to oxidize methanol for carbon and energy, requires lanthanide ions for its activity.
